Hotels in Naran

Naran is a summer town. It sits at about 2,400 metres on the Kunhar river in the Kaghan valley, and for roughly four months a year it is one of the busiest destinations in the country. Hotels line the Main Bazaar and the riverside stretch, with quieter options further along the Kaghan road and up toward Batakundi. Riverside rooms cost more and are worth it for the sound; bazaar rooms are cheaper and closer to the food and the jeep stand for Saif-ul-Malook.

Rates move sharply with the calendar. In June and September a decent double runs Rs 5,500 to Rs 12,000. Through July and August, especially on weekends, the same room costs Rs 15,000 to Rs 28,000, and the better riverside properties cross Rs 35,000. Book three to four weeks ahead for July and August weekends. A jeep to Saif-ul-Malook, nine kilometres up a rough track, runs Rs 4,000 to Rs 7,000 return per vehicle and is not included in any hotel rate.

The drive from Islamabad is 270 kilometres and takes seven to nine hours via the Hazara Motorway to Mansehra, then Balakot, Kawai and Kaghan. The road above Kawai is narrow and slow, and landslides after heavy rain close it for hours at a time. Babusar Top, the 4,173-metre pass linking Naran to the Karakoram Highway at Chilas, usually opens in late June and closes with the first heavy snow, often in October. Check its status before planning a loop through Gilgit.

Outside the season, Naran effectively shuts. Snow closes the road above Kaghan from around November until May, most hotels board up, and the permanent population moves down the valley. That makes late May and early October narrow and rewarding windows: fewer people, half the rates, but limited food options and a real chance of an early or late snowfall changing your plans. Nights are cold in every month, so pack warm clothing even in July.
