Hotels in Kalam

Kalam sits at about 2,000 metres where the Ushu and Utror rivers meet to form the Swat, at the top of the valley road. The bazaar is compact and the hotels cluster around it and along the riverbank, with quieter cabins and guesthouses out at Ushu and Matiltan in the cedar forest. It is a working mountain town for eight months and a busy tourist one for four, and the difference between a riverside room and a bazaar room here is worth paying for.

Expect Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 a night off-peak and Rs 11,000 to Rs 20,000 in July and August, with riverside and forest cabins at the upper end. Kalam is cheaper than Naran for comparable rooms and considerably less crowded. Jeep hire is the main additional cost: Mahodand Lake is about 35 kilometres up a rough track from Kalam and a return day trip runs Rs 8,000 to Rs 14,000 per vehicle. Utror and Gabral are shorter and cheaper runs.

Getting here means the full Swat valley drive: Islamabad to Mingora on the Swat Expressway in four to five hours, then another two and a half to three hours through Bahrain and Madyan. The Bahrain to Kalam stretch has improved considerably but still narrows in places and suffers landslides during monsoon rain. The 2022 floods rebuilt several sections of this road, so satellite imagery and older guidance are unreliable. Ask locally about conditions before setting off in July or August.

The season is June to September, with July and August the busiest. Snow closes the Mahodand track until roughly June and the higher side valleys at Utror and Gabral open later still. Winter access to Kalam itself depends on the year and is often cut for stretches between December and March. Nights are cold in every month. Bring cash, since card acceptance above Bahrain is minimal and mobile coverage drops in and out along the valley.
