Shogran travel guide

Shogran's season runs roughly April to October, which is longer at both ends than Naran's — the altitude is lower and the access road is shorter, so the plateau opens earlier and stays reachable later. If you want the Kaghan valley in a month when Naran is still shut, this is usually where you end up.

The meadows at Siri Paye are at their greenest in July and August, which is also when the jeep track is busiest and when rooms move from Rs 5,000 to Rs 11,000 up to Rs 12,000 to Rs 22,000. Siri Paye holds snow into May, so an early-season trip should be planned on the assumption that the plateau is the destination and the meadows above it are a maybe.

Winter visits are possible when the road is clear and a handful of properties stay open, but heavy snow can cut the plateau off for a day or two and the Siri Paye track shuts entirely. If you go between December and March, confirm heating, hot water and generator backup, and keep the return date flexible. Nights are cold from September in any case.

Five to six hours from Islamabad via the Hazara Motorway, Mansehra, Balakot and Kawai. That is about two hours less than Naran, and it is the whole commercial argument for Shogran: it turns a long weekend into a realistic single-night stop, or a first taste of the north for someone who is not ready to commit to a seven-to-nine-hour drive.

The last eight kilometres are the part that decides how the day ends. The climbing road from Kawai up to the plateau is paved but steep and narrow, and small cars struggle when it is wet or crowded. Four-wheel drive and higher-clearance vehicles manage it comfortably. Many visitors park at Kawai and take a local jeep up for a few thousand rupees, which is the safer option in rain and worth deciding at the bottom rather than halfway.

Kiwai waterfall sits at the turnoff and is where most travellers stop for trout, which makes it the natural break in the drive whether or not you intend to stay. If you are carrying on rather than staying, Naran is another two and a half hours up the valley from here.

Siri Paye is reached only by jeep. The track above the plateau runs about ten kilometres and is rough enough that ordinary cars cannot use it, so the vehicle is not optional and its cost is not part of any room rate. Expect Rs 3,500 to Rs 6,000 for a return trip in a vehicle seating six.

Two things are worth settling before you set off rather than after. The first is the waiting time at the top — agree how long the driver holds for you, because that conversation goes badly once you are standing in a meadow. The second is the hour: in July and August the track queues by late morning, so an early start is the difference between the meadows and the queue.

In May, and sometimes into it, the answer may simply be that the track is still under snow. That is the trade for coming in the shoulder season, and it is a reason to treat Siri Paye as the best thing about a Shogran trip rather than the only thing.

Rooms run Rs 5,000 to Rs 11,000 a night off-peak and Rs 12,000 to Rs 22,000 through July and August. Meadow-facing rooms carry a premium of a few thousand rupees over the same property's rear-facing rooms, which is a smaller gap than the equivalent view commands in Naran or Murree.

For families, the cabins and cottages are the thing to ask about. Units sleeping four to six are common on the plateau and work out cheaper per head than taking two rooms, which changes the arithmetic of a July trip more than any negotiation over the nightly rate will.

Then add the jeep. Rs 3,500 to Rs 6,000 return for Siri Paye is the main add-on cost and it is per vehicle rather than per person, so it is one of the few line items that gets cheaper with a larger group. Budget it as its own cost, not as an extra.

Accommodation sits along the plateau in a mix of hotels, cottages and cabins, most with meadow or valley views. It is a small enough spread that the practical choice is between a hotel room and a cabin, and between a view and a few thousand rupees, rather than between neighbourhoods.

Kawai, at the bottom of the eight-kilometre climb, is the other option and a genuine one if the weather has turned or you are arriving late. It puts you at the Kiwai waterfall and the trout stop, on the valley road, without the climb — at the cost of not waking up on the plateau, which is most of what you came for.

Further afield, Kaghan is an hour up the valley from the Kawai turnoff and cheaper again, and Naran is two and a half hours on. Both make sense as the next night rather than as a base for visiting Shogran, since the plateau road is not something to drive twice in a day for fun.
