This page is about working out which part of Karachi your trip belongs in. Come back here if the question is open, because Karachi is large enough that the area you pick decides your trip, and the difference between a good choice and a bad one is not the room. It is forty minutes, twice a day, for as long as you are here.

Four groupings do most of the work. Clifton and DHA hold the boutique hotels, the sea-facing rooms and most of the restaurant scene, and they are where visitors on leisure trips end up. Saddar and the II Chundrigar Road corridor serve business travellers, close to the port, the banks and the old colonial centre. PECHS and Gulshan-e-Iqbal are the mid-range value belt with good access to Shahrah-e-Faisal. The airport area suits early departures and nothing else — the record is deliberately blunt about that, and it is right.

The second thing to get straight before you book anything is the calendar, because Karachi's runs the opposite way to the rest of the country. Here, winter is both the pleasant season and the busy one. Working on the assumption that November is a quiet month, as it would be in the north, is the most common way to be surprised by a Karachi rate.

If the trip is business at the banks, the port or along II Chundrigar Road, stay in Saddar or that corridor and take the older building over the newer one further out. Karachi's morning traffic is the reason: a room that is fifteen minutes from your first meeting is worth more than a better room half an hour past it, and the corridor is not somewhere you want to be commuting into at 9am. The old colonial centre is walkable in a way most of the city is not, which is a genuine benefit for a two-day trip.

If the trip is leisure, or you are visiting and want to eat well, Clifton and DHA are the obvious answer and the Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000 band buys the location rather than the room. Sea-facing rooms sit at the top of that band, and the five-star properties near Club Road and Sea View run Rs 45,000 to Rs 85,000 before tax and service charge. This is the side of the city where the restaurants are, which matters more than it sounds like it should, because eating out here usually means driving to it.

If you are visiting family, on a longer stay, or simply want the money to go further, PECHS, Bahadurabad and Gulshan-e-Iqbal are the value belt at Rs 7,000 to Rs 14,000, with good access to Shahrah-e-Faisal — which is the artery that connects the airport, the business corridor and most of the rest of the city. It is a reasonable compromise base if your days are going to be spread out rather than concentrated in one district.

For a family, look at serviced apartments in DHA before you price two hotel rooms. They are common there and often work out cheaper than a pair of rooms, with the significant caveat that the electricity arrangement decides whether that is true. Ask whether the bill is capped and what happens above the cap, because summer air conditioning in Karachi is relentless and an uncapped unit in May can undo the entire saving.

Jinnah International Airport sits on Shahrah-e-Faisal, 25 to 40 minutes from Clifton depending on traffic, and it is the busiest arrival point in the country. That position is convenient in the ordinary case and is the exact thing that fails in the monsoon, because Shahrah-e-Faisal is also the road that floods. If you have a fixed departure in July or August, build slack into the airport run rather than trusting the usual timing.

Inside the city, allow forty minutes to cross from Clifton to Gulshan-e-Iqbal and considerably more during the Friday afternoon and evening rush, which follows Jumma prayers and is worth planning around rather than discovering. That single number is the best argument for choosing an area by where you will be each morning rather than by which photograph you liked. Two districts that look adjacent on a map are an hour and twenty minutes of daily driving.

Public transport helps at the margins. The Green Line bus covers the Surjani to Numaish corridor and newer BRT lines cover parts of University Road, but neither is likely to match a visitor's route. What actually works is app-based cars, which are cheap and available around the clock, and that availability is the reason a late-night arrival in Karachi is less stressful than in most Pakistani cities. For onward travel, the M-9 reaches Hyderabad in about two hours and continues to Sukkur on the M-5, and trains to Lahore run overnight from Karachi Cantt.

November to February is mild, dry and busy. The sea breeze makes the evenings comfortable, daytime temperatures sit in the twenties, and the wedding calendar is in full swing at the same time — so the pleasant months and the crowded months are the same months, which is not true anywhere else in the country. Two to three weeks of lead time is the working assumption for that window, and more if your dates land on a weekend.

April to June is hot and humid, and the humidity is the part that catches people who are used to dry heat elsewhere in Pakistan. This is the cheap window, and if the trip is business rather than leisure it is a perfectly reasonable one, provided the room's power arrangements hold up — see below. July and August bring the monsoon, and the specific failure mode is fast: heavy rain floods underpasses on Shahrah-e-Faisal and around Gulshan within an hour of a shower starting. That is a transport problem rather than a hotel problem, but it decides which side of a flooded underpass you would rather be sleeping on.

Ramadan is the other calendar to check, because it moves each year and it changes restaurant hours dramatically across the city. If your trip falls in it, a property with in-house catering is worth more than usual, and it is worth asking what the hotel actually serves and when rather than assuming the neighbourhood will provide.

Karachi quotes are frequently incomplete in two ways at once. Most properties quote before sales tax on services, and four- and five-star hotels often add a separate service charge on top of that, so a Rs 45,000 headline is not a Rs 45,000 night. Ask for the all-in nightly total in writing. Then ask how breakfast is counted: it is usually bundled at mid-range level and billed per person at the top end, which changes the number materially for two people and rewrites it for four.

Ask about parking and generator backup together, because in summer they are the same conversation. Power interruptions matter more here than in most of the country given the heat and humidity from April onward, and a property that has backup for the lights but not the air conditioning is not usable in June. If you are driving or hiring a car with a driver, confirm where it actually parks, since street parking in Clifton and Saddar is a different proposition from a compound.

If you are looking at a serviced apartment in DHA — which is often the right answer for a family or a stay over a week — the electricity clause is the whole negotiation. Establish whether the bill is capped, what the cap is, and what the rate is above it, and get that in the agreement rather than agreed on the phone. Everything else about serviced apartments here is straightforward; that one clause is where the surprise lives.

Finally, be honest about the airport question. Staying near the airport is right for a genuinely early departure or a short layover and wrong for anything else, because there is little in walking distance and you will spend the trip driving back into the city you came to see. If the flight is at a civilised hour, Clifton at 25 to 40 minutes is closer than it feels.
