Murree
Punjab
Murree has two peaks a year, the June to August heat escape and the late December snow rush, and rates roughly double in both.
Nathia Gali sits in thick pine forest at 2,500 metres and stays ten degrees cooler than Murree, an hour further on.
Nathia Gali is the quiet centre of the Galyat, a small bazaar surrounded by dense pine and oak forest at around 2,500 metres. It suits walkers rather than shoppers. The Pipeline Track to Dunga Gali is a flat four-kilometre forest walk almost anyone can do, and the Miranjani summit trail climbs to just under 3,000 metres in about three hours. Accommodation runs from forest department rest houses and small guesthouses in the bazaar to a handful of larger hotels along the Governor House road.
Rooms cost less than Murree for comparable quality. Expect Rs 6,000 to Rs 12,000 a night off-peak and Rs 14,000 to Rs 25,000 in July and August, when Islamabad families arrive in force. Forest and tourism department rest houses in Nathia Gali and Ayubia sit at Rs 6,000 to Rs 12,000 year-round but have four to twelve rooms each and need a written booking three to four weeks ahead. Restaurant options in the bazaar are limited, so check whether your property serves dinner.
The drive from Islamabad takes about three hours via Murree and the Galyat road, or a similar time up the Hazara Motorway to Abbottabad and across through Thandiani. The Murree route is more scenic and more congested; the Abbottabad route is faster in summer weekends. Ayubia is fifteen minutes away with its chairlift, and Abbottabad is about an hour down. Public transport exists but is infrequent, so most visitors drive or hire a car with a driver.
The forest is the point, and it changes completely by season. June to September is green, cool and busy. October and November bring clear air and the best long views toward the Kaghan peaks. Snow settles from late December to February and the Galyat road between Murree and Nathia Gali is occasionally closed for a day after heavy falls. Bring a jacket in any month; nights drop into single figures even in July, and rain arrives without much warning.
