Hotels in Muzaffarabad

Muzaffarabad sits at around 740 metres where the Neelum river meets the Jhelum, which makes it warmer than most Kashmir destinations and greener than the plains. Hotels concentrate near Domel and along the Neelum Road out of town, with a handful of better properties on the Chehla Bandi side facing the river. Upper Adda holds the bus stands and the cheaper stock. Almost everyone here is either working in the capital or passing through on the way up the Neelum valley.

Rooms run Rs 4,500 to Rs 9,000 for a mid-range double and Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 at the better river-facing properties. Rates are stable except in July and August, when Neelum-bound traffic fills the town, and around Eid holidays. This is the last place with reliable banks, ATMs, fuel and vehicle workshops before the valley road, so draw cash and fill the tank here rather than expecting either at Kutton or Keran.

From Islamabad there are two routes, each about three and a half to four hours. The Murree and Kohala road is more scenic and slower, and doubles as a first-night option in Bhurban. The Mansehra and Garhi Habibullah road via the Hazara Motorway is faster and better surfaced. Pir Chinasi, a 2,900-metre shrine and ridge about thirty kilometres east, is the standard half-day trip and gives long views over the town and the two river valleys.

April to October is the season, with May, June and September the most comfortable. July and August are humid at this altitude and the monsoon brings landslides on the Neelum road. The town was the epicentre area of the 2005 earthquake and much of what you see is rebuilt, including the Red Fort restoration above the Neelum river. Winters are cool and wet rather than snowy, and the town stays fully accessible year-round.
